About Empty Bowls:
The Empty Bowls Project was started by the nonprofit organization imagine/RENDER to raise money and awareness to fight hunger. Cities across the United States hold yearly Empty Bowls Dinners to benefit hunger fighting charities in their communities.
2019 Beneficiary: Peter’s Porch
Peter’s Porch was started in the summer of 2008 by Zion Lutheran Church, Akron. We were responding to Jesus’ invitation to feed the hungry, hearing our calling and purpose as a church. What began as a simple breakfast and clothing giveaway evolved into a monthly ministry of hospitality and assistance that included groceries, adult and children’s clothing rooms, a hot breakfast, personal and hygiene supplies. CAP nutrition educators have brought healthy samples and recipes to try, elated to the foods we offered our guests. A partnership with Millersville School of nursing provides monthly blood pressure and blood sugar checks, as well as a wealth of wellness information and tools to stay physically and mentally healthy.
In response to the growing needs in the northern Lancaster county community, Zion sought partners to multiply the ministry. In 2012, Faith United Lutheran in Denver became the second Peter’s Porch location, opening their doors on the 1st Saturday of every month. In 2015, Lititz Mennonite Church began to offer Peter’s Porch on the 2nd Saturday of the month. And in 2018, Landis Valley Community Church started the fourth Peter’s Porch. Every Saturday, guests are welcomed at a Peter’s Porch. We welcome over 250 guests every month. Together, with many partners, we serve our neighbors experiencing the effects of poverty—food and housing insecurity, hunger, homelessness, health care challenges, and social isolation.
